Fountain Hills Open House Nov 14-15th

We will be hosting an open house at our new design studio on November 14-15th, 9:30-5pm each day.

Former NHL superstar Jim Johnson has been known to stop by our studio unanounced.

Desperate Housewives and Mad Men star John Slattery loves our eco-friendly story and comfort. Here he is with JL who looks a tad flush.

We will have many products never seen before on display in our studio, out in the parking area, on the side walk and in the covered patio area.

Mark Suess, designer of the outdoor teak collections, beamed when Arizona Governor, Janet Napolitano commented on the beauty of his work. (Not sure if either will be at the studio, but hey, the old teak door in the background will be on display).

Its hard not to think of a beatiful fall weekend with out the mention of football and of course America's Team. Yes, the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones. Well, maybe some players from the Fountain Hills High School football team will drop in.

Refreshments will be served.

I can't say with any certainty there will be any celebrities or dignitaries dropping in but as more and more people hop on the "Eco-Train Express", you never know who you may run into at our up and coming new location.

The new design studio is taking shape now here in Foutain Hills. Each week the snowbirds are flocking south and with it the traffic and interest level keeps growing in our custom, eco-friendly teak furniture business.

We are right on Palisades. So close to the fountain you can see it just to the right of the chair.

Yes, she announces, we are open for business.

Hopefully with the election behind us, the people watching and waiting will realize the world did not implode and life will get back to normal.

The studio is unique because of the indoor and outdoor showroom area.

A glimpse of the many exclusive designs not found anywhere else in the world.

If you have decided its time to come and check us out, remember we are in the same complex as the Goodwill Center and the great dining of Terra Nostra.

The Eco-friendly way is spreading to many different facets of living. When we look at where our rustic furniture fits into the US, many people associate us with the "Tuscan" look or the mountain lodge feel.

We also have had alot of interest from the Cowboy followers. I am not talking real cowboys. This is the wannabee weekend Wrangler. This is the oil exec. in Dallas that wants to escape to their ranch on the weekend and they want the Cowboy feel. The financial exec. on Wall Street that wants to escape to the Yellowstone Club for a little down time.

This is the Silicon Valley mogul getting away to one of Discovery Land's properties.

These wannabee Cowboys have shown a real interest in big, chunky look that will last for generations.

That is why we decided to introduce the outdoor Rusteaka Collection with a new look of leather with hair on hide.

Hours away now from the Inaugural Barrett-Jackson Car Collector event in Las Vegas now and the mood is very upbeat. This event is held at the Mandalay Bay which is a top quality venue.

I am very impressed with the detail oriented team of people that Barrett-Jackson has on board. After many years of trade shows here in many different industries, I can easily say that this has been the best well run set up of any.

NO DOOM AND GLOOM HERE- The feeling around the set up area is of optimism. There is optimism because Barrett-Jackson has done this so many years with so much success in Scottsdale and now they have taken the next step to get out of Westworld with the rickety tents to this beautiful facility.

I can really envision new interest and new buyers coming from this upscale environment.

Yes, the overall economy is in some unstable times but its not felt here right now. People are spending money to be here and by the looks of the private jets flying today, it feels like the right buyers are in the area.

As I sat in our beautiful teak furniture in our booth this afternoon, I glanced around next to me. Just over one aisle was an entire lear jet. Yes, you read that right. An entire private Lear Jet on display for the discerning clientele.

Just in front of me was an entire Rolex watch booth which was next to a Ferrari booth and of course this high end jewler I can only hope my wife doesn't notice.

Should be some interesting days ahead.

I can only say how pleased I am to be involved with Barrett-Jackson and I can only say thank you Patrick the CFO of Barrett-Jackson for introducing me to this interesting crowd.

JL just returned from Miami after introducing our eco-friendly furniture to the contract/commercial market of Florida and the Carribean countries.

The response was huge for our unique products. Trinidad, Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic and many other places showed tremendous interest in our products.

Many hotel and resort operators are really talking about LEEDs and the US Green Building Council. We have been on this push now for 10 years and now its finally hit mainstream.
The Palisades Chair with Viro Woven resin and reclaimed teak was a huge draw at the show.

With the current economy some of our residential business has slowed. This is a welcoming new direction for us. Watch for us to be introducing many new products of both teak and woven resin for the contract/commercial market in the coming months.

An article in the magazine emphasized the need to be creative in your business approach in this current climate.

The article suggests you need to "Ignite your team's innovative spark--and watch fresh ideas power your business to new heights."

The kind of deep listening that Lee and Coles recommend is what helped Jay Jackson and his wife, JL, first realize the potential of Global Surroundings, their recycled teak furniture business.

While Jay, now 44, had a job managing the distribution of audiovisual products in Southeast Asia, JL found that there was a market for custom-made furniture for foreigners moving to Singapore.

The couple launched their furniture importing business when they returned to the United States 12 years ago, making arrangements with a factory and crafts-men in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to make furniture from the teak walls and floors of homes that needed to either be restored or torn down.

"We were selling the concept of uniqueness at first," says JL, 44, of the Phoenix-based company. "We thought it was really cool that this dining room table was made from someone else's floor."

But their company was regarded as just another furniture manufacturer at industry trade shows.

Then they realized that many customers looking for sustainably made products were excited by their recycled teak because it didn't involve further rainforest destruction--and excited by their stories of rebuilding villagers' old teak homes with brick after a destructive earthquake.

The Jacksons not only refocused their business on the eco-friendly market, but also fine-tuned their offerings by paying attention to home and garden trends. They found that high-income families were eager to invest in lavish outdoor living rooms.

The Jacksons already had the perfect material, as teak is weather-resistant, so they paired up with designer Mark Suess to develop a line of high-end, outdoor furniture.

The Jacksons didn't just find out how to produce the right product by listening to their customers--they figured out how to market to them.

Trade shows were still a struggle in this hotly competitive market, so they decided to establish a presence at some of the places frequented by their high-end consumers.

In one case, they had a prime spot in a luxury lifestyle pavilion at a collector car auction, right next to the Learjet space.

"You have to figure out nontraditional ways to market to the end consumer," says JL, who expects sales of $1 million this year. "Be in the places where you can be seen without the competition."

Back to the Mountains

The last trip to the mountains was March. That was the time I ran smack into a full blown blizzard and had to sleep in a gymnasium of a high school in a small town in northern New Mexico. Good times. This trip was different.

As you can see at this ski resort, our Rusteaka Collection fits right in and compliments the rugged mountains very well.

This time visiting the mountains, I was in the mix of beauty just outside of Telluride, Colorado. That is the quaint ski town that has residents like Tom Cruise and Oprah. Up the road by Ridgway, Ralph Lauren has a beautiful spread of about 15,000 acres.

The main focus of this trip was to meet up with the premier designer in western Colorado, Abby Dix who owns Palladin Design in Ridgway, Colorado.

World's First Eco-Chair

Recently in Las Vegas at the Hospitality Design Expo we introduced the world's first woven resin and reclaimed teak club chair.

The Palisades Collection is a line of 100% recylable resin from Viro which is the leader in woven resin manufacturing. We then combined that with reclaimed teak wood accent pieces to a very modern look.

What really made it the talk of the show though was the comfort of the chair. The cushions are made of all-weather Sunbrella, great for indoor or outdoor living.

The Palisades Chair was originally designed after the common leather club chair but for outdoors. Quickly though, the feedback was that it was so comfortable, it is blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

Soon following will be an entire collection including a sofa, love seat, coffee table and side table.

Interest has been high from resorts for both indoors in common areas and around pools.

Global Surroundings purchases old homes in Java, Indonesia, made of old teak wood. The Indonesian families then get a new brick home, once only a dream. “We buy and dismantle their house, re-using every part to create our furniture.” notes Jackson, “We will use the front door of an old home and add that into an armoire. Old floor boards are used in constructing beautiful dining tables. Heavy beams and posts are re-sawn to be used in table legs and other parts of furniture where one piece of wood is needed. We are constantly seeking new ways to use the existing materials.”

Everyday Is Earth Day

Ironically the day I land at our factory in Indonesia it is regarded across the world as Earth Day. Well for the last 10 years, that is what we have been promoting with our eco-friendly furniture so we feel everyday is Earth Day.

The whole trip to Indonesia this time was initiated by a very large commercial opportunity that we have landed in Colorado. Details of this amazing resort and high-end golf/equine community will be released in June but I can say it will be the premiere resort in Colorado if not the entire rocky mountains.

I came to our factory in Indonesia to oversee the production of both indoor and outdoor furniture for this beautiful community and of course to hit an almost unatainable deadline... But we will pull it off. A quick 37 hours of travel for a one hour meeting. Actually there is much more to this trip but that was what initiated the trip across the big pond.

Some days now we are up to over 50,000 web hits a day on our web site with people interested in eco-friendly furnishings and architectural elements for both commercial and residential applications. 5 Years ago hardly anyone knew even what LEEDS was or the USGBC and trading Carbon Credits and now the bandwagon is getting interesting.

So if you are knew to our site or just interested in my latest Indonesian adventure, here goes:
Our factory is located in Java, Indonesia. What makes us unique is we buy old homes that are made of teak wood, (well, some of the house is teak).

Standing next to the owner of this home, some of the teak we would use is right behind us.

Once we give the local people money for their old wood, then they add on a brick or cement home that is much more durable and prestigious.

The right side of the home is the old teak wood and the left side is the new addition of the cement and brick that they added on.

What we do with the wood depends upon what part of the home it came from. Below illustrates old doors that we found. They will be turned into doors for a cabinet or even a dining table top.

Old Pillar bases that hold up the home can be used as the base for a coffee or side table or even a bench and add alot of character as you can see below .

Other parts of the home will be then turned into various pieces of furniture. Below is a photo of a console table that has been constructed but has not been sanded yet so the piece still has some old paint on it. Sometimes I wonder if it should be just left like that which is a funky look in its own way.

Later in the day, I took a break with some of the workers in the factory. We are in the process of designing many new products to compliment what we are already producing and the workers at the factory are always up to a new challenge on construction.

So spending Earth Day 2008 could only be fitting at our eco-friendly factory in Java, indonesia. Then again, every day is Earth Day now....

Outdoor Conversation Furniture

They call them "chat tables" for a reason. The latest craze in outdoor furniture is to create products made to lounge in. We recently developed a Chat Table to go with the Rusteaka Club Chairs.

The Mountains Are Green

Even though the mountains were filled with snowy roads, they really are green. This trip brought us to the surroundings areas of Vail, Beaver Creek, Snowmass, Aspen, and Telluride.

Every retailer and every magazine that featured mountain living is spreading the word about eco-friendly living.

Even with the slumping housing market in the mid-range pricing, the high-end communities are still going strong. Many new private enclaves are continuing to be built and the buzz words of LEEDS, carbon foot prints and being green are seeping into all aspects of the rockies.

It takes a lot of hard work especially in the middle of the winter to get to these remote regions with a van load of samples but I think these retailers and designs appreciate seeing products first hand at their facility compared to a trade show in Vegas or High Point.

The town of Telluride and up the hill in Mountain Village are booming with eco-friendly building concepts. Our reclaimed teak furniture is the perfect compliment.

Last July after an 8000 mile trip through almost every major ski community it was concluded the high-end mountain towns are perfect for our rustic teak look with an eco-friendly story.

It becomes very clear very quickly, that no matter what you socio-economic status is, you clearly care about the environment, whether you live in the mountains full time or you are a part time inhabitant.

During the trip last summer, a number bonds were formed with exciting retailers and design firms from the Big Sky of Montana to Taos, New Mexico.

One design firm stood out that after 10 years of doing this business, I have never witnessed a more professional organization that specializes in mountain living at its best for both residential and commercial.

The story could go on and on but the picture has been drawn, Slifer is the firm in high-end mountain living and we felt fortunate to be invited to show our exciting collections of indoor and outdoor living to them.

The world is catching on to being eco-friendly in your living spaces and Slifer Designs is at the forefront of that movement. This will be a great partnership together.

It is hard to imagine a meeting in July of 2007 would lead us to JL standing in a blizzard in Edwards (just west of Vail) in March, 2008.

At least she was able to fly up for the meeting. I was fortunate enough to drive up from Arizona with samples, get caught in a blizzard and spend a night in a gymnasium cuddling up basketballs and hoolahoops in northern New Mexico.

SUPER BOWL CELEBRATION SPOTLIGHTS ECO-FRIENDLY MOVEMENT

Sports elite, movie stars and politicians converged onto the Desert Botanical Garden, in Phoenix, Arizona on February 2nd for a Super Bowl Celebration like no other. Super agent, Leigh Steinberg hosted this unique celebration with the theme of “going green”.

The location in this beautiful garden was set on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon that was very serene. Approximately 2,000 VIP guests walked up the “green carpet” and into the celebration that benefited the Arizona Environmental Fund.

Most people recognize Leigh Steinberg as the Super Agent who has represented Quarterbacks like Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, Steve Young and was the inspiration behind the movie Jerry Maguire.

He also is a noted environmentalist and used this annual event as a platform to promote environmentalism through sports and showcase sustainable practices and technologies.

We were proud to be invited to display our eco-friendly furniture located immediately when the guests left the “green carpet” and entered the celebration.

Mark Suess, designer of the outdoor teak collections, beamed when Arizona Governor, Janet Napolitano commented on the beauty of his work.

John Slattery, television star of Desperate Housewives, loved the look of the furniture and that was eco-friendly too.

The Leigh Steinberg Super Bowl celebration is always a “must attend” event for the social elite. Combining sports and the environmental movement has cast the eco-friendly message into the mainstream media and we were honored to be included in this special event.

Barrett-Jackson Huge Success For Global Surroundings

The Barrett-Jackson Car Event ended up being a huge sucess. Although 14 hour days and 8 days straight of being at a trade show, at least we had comfortable furniture to sit in and talk to our customers.

"Barrett-Jackson was the perfect venue for us", said JL Jackson. "The type of clientele to attend this show is there to have fun and they want to be surrounded by beautiful products. Our furniture was ideally placed in the Lifestyle pavilion next to other upscale vendors"

At times there were upwards of 75 people standing in front of our booth looking at these two new beautiful teak collections. Maybe it had to do with us being right next to the Johnny Walker Bidders Lounge.... By the way, Barrett-Jackson chose us to be the exclusive vendor for their teak furniture display in the Bidders Lounge and it worked out great that it was situated right next to our booth.

A few interested people stopping by to see the new designs. 280,000 in attendance over 8 days broke the record crowd of a quarter million people last year.

Global Warming Minnesota Style

Greetings from the Tundra,

Some people ask, can you really leave this beautiful furniture outside all year long? The bench in the photo is an antique we found in a remote village of Java, Indonesia. It now resides in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota at JL's sister, the Thorsgaard's home. The photo is of our daughter Eva and her friend on the second day of winter, December 22nd.

This bench is left outside year round and like all teak furniture, it fades to a beautiful gray patina with no up keep.

Getting out of the Arizona desert and up in a Minnesota winter makes it really feel like the Holidays. Enjoy the season.

The Bali Road Map is going to change the future of our climate and change the way people look at our business. Clearly the United States is finally going to be on board with the rest of the world on climate change and it will trickle all the way down to the furniture industry in a big way.

Ten years ago when we began this business, we used recycled teak wood to build furniture simply because it looked cool and was a good story. Now today the world is realizing that keeping your carbon footprint to a minimum is good for everyone.

In 2008 look for us to incorporate more designs with reclaimed teak and even other mediums.

Whether you are a retailer, a designer or an end user, the time is now to hop on the eco-friendly train. This is not "greenwashing". This is real, and now the tipping point has finally arrived. Welcome to our journey.

Tuscano Bar Introduced

Recently we introduced the Tuscano Bar and Bar Stool to the Mark Suess Collection. The Bar is very elegant and because it is made of teak wood, it can be used inside or out.

The Bar Stool is of teak an iron and is very durable. The heavy iron used will not blow away. The hand carving on each piece is stunning.

Rusteaka Collection Hot in Texas

It seems lately the Rusteaka Collection is seeing the hottest reception right now in Texas. We have two retailers in particular, that are doing an outstanding job with Rusteaka. Covering Austin and San Antonio is the very stellar outdoor retailer: Greenhouse Mall. They have two locations in the Austin area and one in San Antonio.

Rusteaka fits in well in the Hill Country and they are the premiere retailer in the area.

The Arrangement is a fabulous furniture store with locations in Dallas and Houston. They bill themselves as "The Best of the New West Home Interiors". Their vision is to create unforgettable home and office settings inspired by the spirit of the west. The store in Dallas is absolutely stunning. If you are headed in to see our products, we suggest you move quickly. On the last two shipments, the furniture is being sold when its still in the back warehouse.

We worked in conjunction with them to design a custom bed. Made of reclaimed teak wood, a carved headboard, this bed is very unique. Texas is a big state but these two retailers cover the 4 major cities very well. Please look them up and check out Rusteaka!

Outdoor Chat Tables perfect for the "Outdoor Living Room"
We are pleased to introduce this new Rusteaka Chat Table. At 42 inches square it is the perfect table to complement the Rusteaka Club Chairs in an "Outdoor Living Room". Made of reclaimed teak wood with a Varathane applied to the top of the finish, this table is a great addition to a Tuscan themed backyard or restaurant.
It is higher than a typical coffee table and lower than a dining table, making it perfect for eating and drinking from your favorite club chair, like the Rusteaka Club.

Tuscan Style Table and Chairs Perfect for Contract Projects

Recently we introduced the Tuscano Round Table and Bellasera Benches. Made of fiberglass reinforced cement with a rustic patina applied, the Tuscano Table is perfect for the project that requires an old-world feel with the materials that will last up to the rigors of a commercial project.
The Bellasera Benches are perfect for dining around the table or work great around a firepit outside. Made of teak wood, the Bellasera Benches are not only beautiful but practical too.

New sized Lawas Bench Introduced

By popular demand the Lawas Bench has been made in a new smaller depth to accomodate entry ways and areas that do not have room for the original Lawas. The painting and overall design remains the same. This has our dark stain with a wirebrush finish. The carving is uniform and the painting has friendly earthtones.
The stain has a Varathane sealant over the top to be left outside.

This is a great bench around a golf course.

The photoshoot the weekend of October 6th was a huge success with many thanks going to the assistance of Photographer Chad Duxbury, and Valley Commercial & Residential Realty, for the use of the spectacular old world tuscan estate in prestigious FireRock Country Club of Fountain Hills, Arizona that is for sale.
We knew the Mark Suess Collections were a hit from the incredible success of the Chicago Casual Show in September. By providing the atmosphere to place the Mark Suess Collections into, they really complimented the look of this beautiful mulimillion dollar home.

Chicago Casual Show Review - "Best of Show"

The introduction of the Mark Suess Collections was a huge hit. Many retailers and members of the media pronounced the Mark Suess Collections, "Best of Show". Head West Young Man, Head West.

Lounging in the comfortable Rusteaka Club Chair in Glacier National Park.

After many years at various trade shows and meeting many end users and retailers, many people have said our stuff would really work in the high end ski communities in the Rocky Mountains.
So early July I decided to head to Montana and work my way all the way to New Mexico. Here is just a list of the some of the high end areas I was at starting in Montana: Bozeman, Missoula, Kallispel, Big Fork, Whitefish, Big Mountain and Big Sky.
I then traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming where I saw first hand how the Billionaires are truly pushing out the Millionaires. I was fortunate to say with a friend who "house sits" a wealthy guys home in Teton Village and his 100 acre estate next to the ski mountain. The neighbors are the Waltons, Duponts, Carlsons and others.
The big growth for our furniture appeared to be on the west side of the Tetons in eastern Idaho. Many world class resorts for golfing, fly fishing and skiing are popping up everywhere in what was once farm land.
Heading further west brought me to Ketchum, Idaho, home to Sun Valley. The theme started to resonate home by now how global warming is shortening their ski seasons and affecting their quality of life in the mountains. When I explained how eco-friendly our reclaimed teak furniture is, retailers really started to take notice.
From Idaho, I pointed the minivan south with my full load of samples in tow. Salt Lake City, Utah was a good fit for our indoor and outdoor lines. The same in Park City where the 2 to 10 Million dollar estates are growing like weeds. Similar growth in Deer Valley all the way to Heber City.
Next came Colorado, the granddaddy of high end ski communities. Some areas in Colorado I covered were: Frisco, Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain, Vail, Beaver Creak, Edwards, Eagle, Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Aspen, Crested Butte, Gunnison, Montrose, Ridgway, Telluride, and Durango.

The large scale cabins and lodges are perfect for our Rusteaka look.

Heading south again brought me to Santa Fe and finally Taos New Mexico where our versatile furniture complimented the pueblo style very well.
After leaving Phoenix the end of June, I drove to Texas and then north to Minnesota. After leaving Minnesota I headed to the mountains and within 5 miles of Canada in Glacier National Park. From there I drove all the way to New Mexico and finally headed back to Phoenix.
8000 Miles and 5 weeks on the road. A trip of a lifetime. Time to rest.... Well, at least till September when I head off to Chicago promoting our new line of Mark Suess Collections at the Chicago Casual Show.....

OK, I have written in May after my trip to Indonesia and now I am just getting back to writing again.
After a few days on the road in California, I came home to my mail and opened the June issue of Casual Living Magazine. I was pleased to see 3 of our retailers won awards for 2007. Congratulations to Hauser's Patio and Rattan ( Most Fashionable Retailer), Paddy O'Furniture, (Best Use of Accessories - Multistore), and The Greenhouse Mall, (Best Outdoor Display - Multistore).

In the middle of May, 2007 I made the trip to our factory in Java, Indonesia. I was fortunate to have the prominent designer, Mark Suess accompany me to work on the new outdoor line that Mark and Global Surroundings will debut in September at the Casual Market in Chicago.
Although we will not release information out on this new line until the show, I can only say that outdoor and indoor living has definitely merged into a beautiful and comfortable world.
